Mike Smith offers expert advice on modelling multi-modal transport networks, answering questions like: how should transport models best be designed, improved or utilised so as to reduce urban congestion?
In 1979 Mike was an initiator of the variational inequality formulation of traffic equilibrium and invented the P0 control policy which, using only local data, maximises the overall capacity of a network. Mike has recently devised new more reliable ways of finding demand/supply equilibria on networks.
In 2007 Mike initiated a Royal Society discussion meeting on “Networks; Modelling and Control†and was presented with the Robert Herman Lifetime Achievement Award in Transportation Science.
