Brent outlines vision for libraries

The proposals include:

*investing an extra £300,000 a year from next year in the 12 libraries around the borough
*allocating £250,000 towards a planned £1.7m project to totally revamp Harlesden Library and create a state-of-the-art library and learning centre
*spending another £180,000 on a modernised Neasden Library in 2008 creating a new, flagship library in the proposed civic centre, to replace the library in Brent Town Hall
*improving opening hours to suit customers better
* updating working practices with innovations such as 24-hour online enquiry services, self-service for loans and returns and staff available throughout the libraries to support customers
*and building a new, modern library with a One Stop Service to replace the current poorly-located Kingsbury Library early next year.

The refurbished Willesden Green Library, which opened last year with longer opening hours and new facilities for teenagers and children, has been hugely successful; with the highest number of visits for four years.

Cllr Irwin Van Colle, Brent Council's lead member for environment, planning and culture, said: "Brent Council wants to provide excellent library facilities that give our customers the best possible services. These proposals are the next step towards doing that.

"Our libraries are an excellent resource and have so much to offer; from best-selling books (which are free to borrow) to the latest blockbuster films and free Internet and email access. I urge local people to come and see for themselves."

The public consultation on the plans will take place in November and December.
