Bury planner retires
One of Bury’s top town planners is retiring after 36 years of service.
John Leatherbarrow, 58, head of planning projects at the council, is taking voluntary early retirement.
Leatherbarrow was educated at Thornleigh College, Bolton, then graduated in Town Planning from Glasgow School of Art in 1975. He joined Bury Council’s planning department in June that year and has been there ever since.
Graham Atkinson, executive director of environment and development services, said: “The list of projects which John has helped to deliver will be recognised by many and each is significant in its own way. But there are many more, not least a range of projects that have resulted in our vibrant town centre. John’s realism, down to earth approach and dedication have produced results and he will be missed.”
