Citizens urged to get involved in ‘Pride of Place’ poll

Local authorities across the country are inviting residents to visit their websites and click on a 'Pride of Place' link to vote for one of ten locally nominated favourite places.

The poll is part of the Government's 'Connect to your Council' campaign, the aim of which is to encourage citizens to access their local authority services online - anytime, anywhere.

104 local authorities across the country are taking part in the poll and have sourced many of their nominations from famous local citizens. The result is a mix of quirky and traditional locations, from the Aslockton pile of horseshoes in Nottinghamshire, to Wigan Pier, Silverstone racecourse and Peterborough Cathedral.

Famous names that have taken part in the poll so far include writer and broadcaster Lord Melvyn Bragg who nominated the northern Lake District and the hill farers that work there and slimming guru Rosemary Conley who voted for Abbey Park in Leicester.

Communities minister, Parmjit Dhanda said:
"We hope the poll will prompt residents across England visit their local council website to vote for the place they are most proud of in their patch. It could be a landmark, town, park, historic site or even a pub - which is sure to generate debate!

"The poll is a fun introduction to the mass of valuable and easily accessible services and information on council websites including planning, schools, libraries, bin collections, and paying bills."

The poll can be accessed from council websites until 30 November after which the results will be released.
