Council tax in Leicester 2% lower than national average

Council Tax charges in Leicester City are 2 per cent lower than the national average, government figures have revealed.

A survey published by the Department for Communities and Local Government shows that taxpayers in a band D property in the city will pay £1,409 in 2010/11, compared with a national average of £1,439.

Most taxpayers in Leicester will actually pay £939, as the majority of properties in the city are in Band A.

Cllr Veejay Patel, leader of the council, said: “I am pleased to be able to confirm that Leicester is a low tax city. Once again the city’s tax is well below that of similar authorities, and the lowest in Leicestershire”.

The figures include the amounts charged by the police and fire authorities, and are for a two-person household with no reductions.
