Liverpool council reassures Southern Cross residents

Liverpool is reassuring residents of Southern Cross care homes following speculation about the future of the firm.

A total of 325 residents are funded in Liverpool – 299 by the city council and a further 26 by Liverpool PCT (Primary Care Trust).

Detailed contingency plans have been in place since May 2011 to make sure there is continuity of care should there be any change of ownership.

The regional manager of Southern Cross has assured the city council that all of the homes in Liverpool are continuing to operate as normal, and there is no indication of any change of landlord at this stage.

Cabinet member for adult social care, councillor Roz Gladden, said: “Our number one priority is the welfare of Southern Cross residents in the city.

“We have been working closely with Liverpool PCT, other local authorities in the area and the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) to make sure we have contingency plans in place for all of the people that could be affected.

“We know these are uncertain times for residents and their families, and a team is on stand by to step in if we need to provide support to any of the homes.

“But is important to stress that at this stage there is no evidence of any imminent transfer of homes to new ownership.

“Should this happen, we would liaise closely with residents and their relatives to make sure any change in their circumstances is sensitively handled and is as seamless as possible.

“If there are further developments we will keep residents and families updated.”
