Londonderry/Derry named City of Culture

Londonderry will be the first British City of Culture in 2013.

Derry won the title ahead of Birmingham, Norwich and Sheffield.

It follows Liverpool's tenure as European Capital of Culture in 2008.

The title, which comes with no Government funding, is designed to help areas boost their economy through tourism and the creative industries.

The decision was announced in Liverpool last night by Culture minister Ed Vaizeyin.
