New fire safety guide published

Working in partnership with West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) and the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA), the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has produced a new practice brief focusing on fire safety in housing.

Fire Safety in Housing builds upon a series of regional seminars held by CIH, WMFS and CFOA which enabled fire and housing professionals to share approaches to practice for fire safety.

The new practice brief is not technical guidance, but it illustrates how a range of different housing providers and the Fire and Rescue Services are working together and in partnership with tenants and residents to create safer communities. It is also designed to compliment forthcoming Local Government Improvement and Development (LGID) guidance on fire safety in purpose built blocks of flats.

Each year there are over 50,000 fires in dwellings in the UK.

John Thornhill, senior policy and practice officer at CIH said: "Fire Safety in Housing illustrates how a range of different housing providers and the Fire and Rescue Services are working together and in partnership with tenants and residents to create safer communities."
