New leader for Newcastle City Council
David Faulkner has been elected as Newcastle City Council’s new leader.
Councillor Faulkner, deputy leader from 2006, has replaced Councillor John Shipley who has become a Liberal Democrat peer.
Faulkner won the Elswick seat in 1973 and remained on the council until 1978. He came back on to the council in 2004 to represent Fawdon ward and served as executive member for Culture, Libraries and Sport from 2004-2006.
Councillor Anita Lower, executive member for neighbourhoods and public protection, will serve as deputy leader.
