Sheffield wins award for being active

Sheffield City Council has won a national award for its work helping local people get more active.

Council service, Activity Sheffield, has won an Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) annual award. It came top in the Internal Service Team of the Year (Sports, Leisure and Cultural Service) category and was awarded a trophy and a certificate.

It beat off rivals Belfast, Derry and Liverpool amongst others to the title.

The category was sponsored by Derry/Londonderry City of Culture and the awards evening was hosted there too.

Cllr Roger Davison, cabinet member for culture, sport and tourism from Sheffield City Council said:

“I’m absolutely delighted that we have received this recognition for the work we do here in Sheffield to help local people get more active, and therefore get more out of life. I’m thrilled for the staff who work in Activity Sheffield and I’m delighted to see them receive this credit, beating off all the other competition. Well done.”

Sheffield’s award bid covered the Care Home Olympics events it organises, their campaign to increase physical activity levels and reduce health related illnesses and activities for adults with mental health issues.

Activity Sheffield was also a finalist in the awards category for Best Information and Communication Technology Initiative and was also a finalist to become the overall winner.

Over 300 submissions were received for the 22 awards available.
