Southampton City Council staff vote to strike

Workers at Southampton City Council have voted in favour of industrial action over proposed pay cuts of up to 5.5 per cent.

Fifty six per cent of the 1,800 Unison members balloted have voted for strikes.

The ballot of the other council union, Unite, does not close until 11 May. Once the result of this ballot is known, the two unions will decide jointly what action to take and when.

The council employs around 6,600 staff.
